RETREAT VENUE IN CADIZ
A UNIVERSE OF CALM, STILLNESS AND JOY
Nestled in the heart of historic Cádiz, at Plaza de San Antonio in the old town’s winding alleyways, lies a singular place where space and spirit converge: Casa Palacio Las Marias. “Las Marias” is a small treasure located in the historic old town of Cádiz. It is a light-filled town palais (casa palacio) from the 18th century. Las Marías is a place where life can be celebrated together. It is a place of encounter, enjoying life and cooking and eating together. The house forms a universe of its own and invites you to regenerate and to experience unforgettable moments.
A Temple of Light, Slow Living, Natural Textures, and Quiet Luxury
This 18th-century casa palacio embraces a philosophy of slow living: the art of savoring, noticing, and living deliberately. Nothing is rushed; only sacred simplicity. The house invites a quieter tempo, one aligned with the lull of ocean tides and the graceful pace of the nights converted into days by the drift of Cádiz’s golden light.
Every suite is adorned with all-natural linen, cotton, and handcrafted textiles, tactile offerings that soften the body and calm the mind. Linen towels, breathable bedding, and earthy textures create an atmosphere of purity and groundedness. These materials, humble yet luxurious, reflect the house’s devotion to authenticity and simplicity. They remind guests that true nourishment is found in what is natural and unforced.
To live slowly here is to breathe with the rhythm of the sea, to wake gently with morning light, to embrace the softness of linen against your skin, and to dissolve into the quiet beauty of being.
The Name “Las Marías”: A Vessel of the Feminine Divine
The name “Las Marías” has long been associated with sacred feminine presence simbolized through nutrition, intuition, sensibility, affection, and creativity. The name becomes a symbol of the divine feminine representing the women spirit woven into the city; the resilience, intuition, softness, and strength of Cádiz’s history.
Within this house, that energy is palpable. It is a place where one can reconnect with the feminine essence within all beings, regardless of gender, the qualities of receptivity, creation, compassion, flow, and deep knowing. In the spirit of the ancient feminine, gathering and sharing becomes a sacred act.
A Venue for Gathering and Renewal
Within this space, life is celebrated together. The kitchens and dining halls invite shared cooking of soul food, communal eating, the overflowing conviviality of meals with intention. Luminous breakfast rooms, dining areas, a fully-equipped kitchen, and on the rooftop a terrace designed for unforgettable gatherings.
When people come together around food and space, they weave a collective rhythm: laughter, conversation, pause, nourishment and pleasure. This is alchemy of connection. Las Marias becomes a temple of hospitality, hospitality in the deepest sense: the welcoming of all parts of self, the “other” and the moment.
As a retreat and workshop venue, it offers not only rooms but the possibility of transformation: awakening with dawn light filtering in, meditative observation from the rooftop, reflective gatherings in the lounge, laughter in the kitchen. The house “forms a universe of its own and invites you to regenerate and to experience unforgettable moments.”
Invitation
Imagine stepping across the threshold of the heavy mahogany main door (itself a marker of transition) into cool marble, dappled light, the hush of a courtyard. As you lay your hand on the banister, you sense the lives that have passed before you. You gather in the kitchen: chopping, sharing, tasting. Later you ascend to the rooftop terrace, dusk colors swirling, and you sit in silent awe at the merge of light, color casts and breeze. Divine sensing of self and surroundings.
At Las Marias, you are both guest and alchemist: you enter as you are, and leave carrying something infused with the stillness of this venue, the soul of the city, and the warmth of shared life. Whether there is a retreat, workshop, creative immersion, or spiritual gathering, Las Marías holds space for transformation, gently and effortlessly.

The Host
MARÍA DEL MAR VON BORRIES
The heart of Las Marías is its host, María del Mar, whose life journey runs like a golden thread through the house. Born in Spain and shaped by many years living in Germany, she carries within her a blend of Spanish and Andalusian warmth, and Central European clarity and symmetry. A harmony that gives Las Marías its unmistakable character and sweetness.
María del Mar is a children’s clothing designer, creating garments full of imagination, softness, and intricate detail. This artistic sensitivity is visible in everything she touches. The textures, the natural fabrics, the colors, the gentle curves of each room, all reflect the hand of someone who understands beauty not as decoration, but as a form of feeling and truth.
But her work and her home are guided by something even deeper. María del Mar is connected to the quiet intelligence that arises when doing and being come into coherence. When she aligned with her inner truth, she crafts creations touched by the divine.
This philosophy is woven into Las Marías. It is a house shaped by freedom, where guests can express themselves openly; by respect, in how the space honors both history and individuality; by education, in the sense of learning through beauty, hospitality, and presence; and by aesthetic harmony, where every detail is chosen with intention and care.
Her vision was to create a place where people from all corners of the world could meet, grow, and reconnect, a home for personal transformation, shared joy, and meaningful encounters. To bring this dream to life, she spent many years lovingly restoring and decorating the house, honoring both its 18th-century soul and her own personal heritage.
Location
Cádiz
An ancient threshold where continents, oceans, and epochs converge. Founded by the Phoenicians more than three millennia ago, it is one of Europe’s oldest cities, yet it carries its age with an effortless luminosity. Here, the past does not sleep. It rises with the tide, hides in the cracks of salt-worn stone, and vibrates in the light that has inspired sailors, philosophers, poets, and mystics for centuries.
